Micanthus Horse Bedding

Why We Chose Miscanthus Bedding Produced By Nonhoron Farms...

As well as running RIverside Trailers we have a small livery yard where we aim to keep our own and clients hoses as happy as possibe at all times as Riverside Trailers we decided to only ever sell products we actively use on our own yard.

Horse bedding

Had become an issue to us in late 2024, with several chalenges  that made us look for something different..

We were on a Small Flake Wood Shaving, but this was creating a few chanlenges,

Famers were no longer keen to take our muck heep as shavings take a long time to break down when ploughed in and they also draw nitrates from the suronding soil

The Muck heap seamed to grow very quickly (we were having to have it removed every 2-3 months)

We seemed to be spending ages mucking out rather than riding

Over the winters with horses being in more we were using a large quantiy of shaving and we wanted something more absorbent

Time for a change

In early 2025  we went to our local suppliers of bedding and bought a  bales of  everything they stocked and tried each for a few months, out of all these we liked miscanthus BUT the one we tried was chopped very short and seemed to keep moving about, if only someone did miscanthus that was shopped just a bit longer  and maybe some Micanthus Pellets as well....

At this point we found NANHORON FARMS

The miscanthus from Nahoron is chopped slightly longer than other brands and we found it settled down well as a bed.  We used the bedding ourselves for about 6 months and once we were totally convinced on the benifits  we approched Nanhoron and became a supplier.

 

A Great Product BUT ...

For very wet horses we had previously added pellets to the beds (we had tried both wood which our local farmers did not want in a musk heap  and straw ) Altough we found Micanthus More Absorbent we thought that maybe a Micanthus Pellet would work really well. After a few converstions with Nanhoron we were thrilled when they added Micanthus Pellets to thier range (at the time of writing the only manufacturer of Micanthus Pellets in the UK

 

So the advantages...

We by selling only one brand of bedding keep our costs down and pass on savings to custommers 

​

Smaller Muck Heap, fwe now only have out Muck Heap Taken Away twice a year before it was approx 5 times!

​

The Horses love lying on it but  dont eat it

​

Mucking out is now very quick (watch the video)

​

We use less bales than when we were on shavings  (typically we were using 5-6 bales of shavings a month  on Nanhoron Micanthus we use 3-4 Bales)

Note:- due to current fuel prices we and our supplier have introduced a fuel surcharge which is reviewed monthly, we felt this was the fairest and most transperent way at the current time.
